Regulations or standards, irrespective of or not directed particularly to the food sector have the potential of affecting the qualities and varieties of food available and accessible for purchase, the information the consumers gain regarding the product, the prices faced by the consumers, as well as the customers’ confidence in relation to food supply. This paper aims at exploring relevant corporate and government standards that can impact on the menu in regard to food and nutrition, funding, truth in meaning, and food safety.

The youths have a demanding dietary need. At the age, the body undergoes physiological changes which compel the youth to want diverse diets. The menus developed should meet the Food and Beverage Criteria (Trifkovic & Københavns Universitet, 2013). Every menu that is posted in youth should be signed by a delegate or licensee indicating that the menu adheres to the Food and Beverage Criteria.

The Alberta government has published a guideline which outlines the recommended nutrition for the youth. In the publication, the right dietary needs of the youths are outlined. For the youth, especially those in detention centers, as in the case, the diet has to have the right mix of proteins and energy giving foods. Besides, vitamins should supplement the diet.

Threatened by critical public opinion and potent government regulation, corporate and industries undertake concern issue statements for public welfare, self-regulatory actions, and emphasize that there is adequate self-regulation for guarding the public. In this regard, the food industry found it necessary to develop highly visible pledges so as to restrain food marketing, label foods responsibly, and sell less unhealthy food products in schools. Ceding regulation to food industries carriers opportunities (Shaw, 2013). However, it is highly risky. In industries such as the tobacco, self-regulation has been known to be an abject failure but in industries such as marine fisheries and forestry, it has been extremely effective.

Regulations and policies that indirectly or directly influence the prices or supply of food products, the nutritional and safety composition, and the information acquired by the consumers in regard to food all impact on the food choices made by consumers and, in due course, the diets’ nutritional quality (Zach, Ellefson & Sullivan, 2013). The impact of regulations and policies on crucial dietary choices is dependent on the impact of the policy on production cost, the relationship between those costs and the final retail prices, the responsiveness of the consumers to price changes, and the direct impact of the policy on the consumers’ choice for the product (Armbruster & Knutson, 2013).

There are standards related to farm assistance programs, and this encompasses of federal income and price support programs in addition to promotion and research agreements and producer-funded marketing orders. The income and price support programs have historically impacted on the marketed supply of a majority of the foods. Some of the marketing orders lay out quality standards for the marketed foods supply. On the same note, promotion programs make attempts to influence commodities’ demand via generic advertising.

Food safety regulations are related to inspection of food products and processing plants, food additives’ approval, as well as limitations on animal drugs and pesticide use. Such regulations have an impact on food availability and prices. Moreover, their implied safety assurance is information that may also influence food demand (Zach, Ellefson & Sullivan, 2013).

Information regulations are related to advertising restrictions and labeling requirements, product grades, and standards of identity. These have a direct influence on the form of information the consumers receive regarding foods and, thereafter, they affect food demands. Regulations related to worker safety and environmental requirements, trade policies and restrictions on mergers impact on prices and specific food products’ availability.
