At the corner of Beijing, a girl with big eyes says “你大爷” to the boy next her, while there is a big smile at her face. The boy bursts into laughter rather than getting mad at her. Same situation shappens everywhere, because there is a appropriation for “你大爷” in Chinese.

If someone looks up this word in the Xin Hua dictionary, the most authoritative Chinese dictionary, they could find out that “你大爷” means your uncle. 大爷 means a man who is older than a person’s father. But sometimes 大爷 also used as the respect for someone who is very rich and powerful. In the book “ 正红旗下,” written by Lao She, one of the most successful writers of Chinese modern history, Mr. Ding would not like to give the tips unless the waiter calls him “大爷”. According to this description, one could easily figure out the old Beijing resident attach importance to this word. However, following the feudalism era China, this word begins to have negative meanings. In newspapers, one could find some titles talking about someone who lives in a luxurious style and being means to poor people. The “大爷” used as the nick name for them.

With the development of the technology and communication, many words have new meanings including “你大爷”. For New Year festival in China, where people always like to watch TV programs made by CCTV. Many popular words can be creating by the operculum in the TV program. “ 你大爷” was born in this program too. This word begins to play new roles among the people. Sometimes it uses as an expression of person’s feeling including, angry, shock, or even exciting and happy. Actually, it has almost the same as “ what the fuck” in English. But not in every situation, people could say bad word such as ‘fuck’ or ‘bitch’. That’s the time when people need this new word. For example, when I left my homework at home, I could say, “你大爷,I forget to take my homework with me!”, as a complain with my friends. Or girls could say this word to show both the little bit angry and the cute of her to others.

In my own opinion, I think this new appropriation has two sides influence. On the one hand, if a word can be used as a new meaning, people might get confused. Old people always have a hard time on receiving new things. And if some one wants to learn Chinese, there is no chance for them to understand want people are trying to express. On the other hand, the new meaning of the word can let people’s life become more convenient. Like I mentioned before, the new use of this word make people express themselves easily. For instance, when a person was pissed out by some person, he or she can say “你大爷” rather than Fuck you or back off. Even those words can show the same expression, but they have different influences. People would feel bad about a person if he or she always uses ‘fuck’ and ‘fucking’. However, Chinese guys would think she is a cute girl if she uses “你大爷”.

In my own opinion of the appropriation of “你大爷”, I believe it is good. The new meaning of this word could let people become more humorous. Especially for teenagers, they like to play jokes on each other. 你大爷 would play a important role on this and will not let people’s friends get mad of them.
